Deep Creek field trip report

Nine members and guest enjoyed a great Eco tour at the Deep Creek property led by Bonnie Cary and Doug Weaver. Doug was the Director of Land Acquisition and Management for Volusia County when the Deep Creek property was acquired and was able to tell us the history of the property and plans for its future uses. Doug is now retired and is a volunteer for the County. Bonnie is very knowledgeable of the land, plants and animals and pointed out different species of plants that we would have missed such as the tiny Sun Dew, a carnivorous plant growing right in the sandy road. She also pointed out animal tracks and scat, things we often see but cannot  always identify. We did see a few birds including Eastern Bluebirds, Pine Warblers and lots of Palm Warblers.   Continue Reading »

Merritt Island NWR trip report

Our November field trip was changed from Blue Heron Wetlands to Merritt Island. A review trip to Blue Heron produced very few birds, likely too early in the season for that site.

It was good birding for early November at Merritt Island. Our small group enjoyed a beautiful day as we covered both Black Point Wildlife Drive and Biolab road. We saw six species of ducks and had good looks at the Least, Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers. All total, we saw 66 species.  Here is a list:   Continue Reading »
