DSC_6592Another great day to be out birding at Merritt Island. We started at the 406 causeway to view the shorebirds that gather there and then found a large number of Dunlin right at the entrance to West Gator Creek Road. Along with the Dunlin there were Least & Western Sandpiper, Willett, Black-bellied Plover, Ruddy Turnstones and Lesser Yellowlegs all within 20 feet or so of the road. At the Visitor Center the male Painted Bunting proudly posed for up close photos and views. The Wildlife Drive was busy with traffic but everyone there was friendly and enjoying the day. We found one good feeding frenzy of mixed species and at least 9 species of duck including several Redheads. The flats at stop 6 produced a variety of shorebirds including more Dunlin, Sandpipers, Plovers and both Long and Short-billed Dowitcher.
