Spruce Creek Field Trip, Oct 9, 2018

Posted by on 22 Oct 2018 | Tagged as: birding

Our local weather was indirectly influenced by Hurricane Michael Oct 9th. Before day light a heavy rain storm came in off the ocean. The rest of the morning we dodged light, fast moving showers. Did see 21 bird species without getting too far from shelter. Species seen,

Mottled Duck, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Green Heron, White Ibis, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Clapper Rail (heard, not seen), Belted Kingfisher, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Fish Crow, Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird and Common Grackle.

Do come join us for our next field trip.

Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge  (3)

Sat Nov 10

We’ll walk wooded trails looking for songbirds and the dike trail around impoundment looking for waders and shore birds. Bring water, snacks and bug spray. And lunch if you want to picnic.

Indian River Lagoon Park field trip,  Oct 6, 2018

Posted by on 22 Oct 2018 | Tagged as: birding

We had a beautiful day for our first field trip of the season.  Glad to welcome a new birder. The park offers a short scenic loop trail through woods. Great habitat for birding.  There is also a wooded trail to the Indian River Lagoon where you will have a good view of Browns Bay. Tide was very high so we didn’t see many wading birds. Nice dock for fishing at end of trail.

Birds we saw at park, Northern Mocking Bird, Blue Jay, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Fish Crow, Mourning Dove, Red-winged Black Bird, Brown Pelican, Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Carolina Wren and Common Grackle. Did see one warbler but he hid before we could identify him.

Later that afternoon a few birds put down in my back yard. Always fun to watch.  Summer Tanager feeding on the few remaining Simpson’s stopper berries. Red-eyed Vireo feeding on poke and beauty berries, Northern Oriole and Ruby-throated Humming Bird feeding at Turk’s Cap and humming bird feeder. American Red Start and Black-throated Blue Warbler hopping among leaves picking off bugs. Prairie Warbler taking bath at mister.  One lone green Painted Bunting at feeder.  Brown Thrasher feeding on beauty berries. Haven’t seen or heard a Cat Bird yet this season.  Please do join us on our field trips.      Happy Birding, Gail
